  3. The Programme

OnFoods was funded under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan as an Extended Partnership dedicated to food and nutrition systems.

NRRP – Mission 4, Component 2, Investment 1.3

The programme operated from 2022 to 2026 with a national scope, involving 26 public and private organisations and more than 600 researchers.

Research architecture

OnFoods was organised around seven thematic Spokes, coordinated by a central Hub acting as implementing Foundation.

The Hub ensured scientific coordination, monitoring of milestones and alignment with national and European priorities, while each Spoke defined and implemented its research programme within a shared framework and common targets. This architecture combined disciplinary expertise with cross-Spoke collaboration, enabling integrated research across sustainability, safety, nutrition and policy.

Activities

Activities covered the full research and innovation cycle, from fundamental investigation to applied experimentation and development phases.

The programme supported multidisciplinary projects and the development of shared scientific resources across participating institutions. A dedicated cascade funding mechanism complemented these activities by enabling additional collaborative projects with strong SME participation within the national innovation ecosystem.

Together, these components defined the operational scope of the programme and its integrated approach across research, innovation and application.
